Can Tarot Predict the Future?

  |   Articles, Tarot Readings

Most people come to a tarot reading curious to know, at least in part, what their future holds. Will I get the job? Will we be happy together? Will I make a lot of money? There is nothing wrong with these questions. It’s natural to want to settle anxiety about the future with some simple, clear answers. The problem is that the answers that the tarot will provide you about your future are not so simple. Yes, tarot can predict the future, but only those parts of the future that you have already created in your present life, and the future that you could create if you choose to make changes.

Confusing, yes? Allow me to explain further.

No matter what, you are always at the center of your tarot reading. The tarot cards reveal all parts of you: your feelings, desires, hopes, fears, thoughts and plans. Sometimes these things are hidden and you may not be aware of them, but they always belong to you. When you query the tarot cards about your future, the cards will reveal how events will develop if you continue following similar patterns. In essence, instead of revealing what will happen TO you in the future (which relegates you to a secondary passive character), the cards reveal what future you will create.

This is an incredibly empowering opportunity, because it means that if you don’t like what you see from the cards, you can change it! By adjusting your actions and behaviors in the present, you will shift future outcomes. This is why it is just as important to look in depth at the past and present cards in a tarot reading. Those cards will reveal patterns you may want to change, unresolved conflicts and blocks, wounds that need healing, behaviors and choices in need of adjusting.

When you start to dig deeper into the present moment and you pinpoint an opportunity for change, you can then query the cards again and ask what that alternate outcome would be. You can also query the cards about how you can make that change, or present the cards with a few different alternate choices or future paths, and see what the outcomes will be for each. In this way, the cards provide a rich amount of information for you to make the choices and decisions that are right for you. In the end, you are the decision maker. You control your future and destiny.

If you do want to look in depth at your future through tarot, here’s how I typically go about it: First, I’ll need to know what you want to happen. What is your goal? I draw four cards, which gives me a lay of the land of the present issue: the central concern, the conflict, underlying issues, the recent past, and resources. Then I begin laying cards in a row from left to right, until I reach a card that signifies the goal or preferred outcome. If seven cards are pulled and the goal does not appear, it means that the outcome is unclear or too far in the future to predict, or it means the goal as of now is not possible.

This reading cannot tell you exactly WHEN something will happen, but it will tell you how. Each of the cards represents steps along the way. Reversed cards are obstacles—issues that you will need to resolve in order to keep moving forward towards your goal.

Always be a bit cautious if you request this type of reading. When you look far into the future, the tarot cards are only revealing how things will develop as they currently stand now. So many factors can change along the way, many of them not in your control. The cards will only show you what you can control or change. To get the most out of your tarot reading, ask your reader to help you break down your final goal into smaller steps, then look into that first small win and see what you will need to accomplish to make it there.
